About this deal

According to our source who has spoken with various players involved in this year's Eisners, it's doubtful. Multiple people attempted to escalate their concerns about him (on the admin side), all to fall on deaf ears.

The Art of the News: Comics Journalism, edited by Katherine Kelp-Stebbins and Ben Saunders (Oregon State University Press)

Spider-Boy gets more love in new Mark Bagley cover

Walt Disney's Uncle Scrooge: The Diamond Jubilee Collection, by Carl Barks; edited by David Gerstein (Fantagraphics) As criticism of Woodruff grew, some on social media suggested that his nominations be reconsidered in light of his past actions. One of this year's Eisner Awards judges, A. David Lewis, has responded publicly about the petition, tweeting that it’s “a slippery slope, rescinding nominations based on opinions of character.” A request to strip Woodruff of his Eisner Awards nominations gains traction Kendra "Kenny" The Kid: I didn't expect this to get the traction it did, but it is wild how I haven't seen any former student have a single nice thing to say about this man, from people ten years older than me AND ten years younger. Tiki: A Very Ruff Year,by David Azencot and Fred Leclerc, translation by Nanette McGuinness (Life Drawn/Humanoids)

One of this year's judges, Sean Kleefeld, shared some insight earlier this month as to how final judging, which typically includes a multi-day meeting of all the judges at Comic-Con International: San Diego's offices in San Diego, works in general. In that piece ( written before the meeting and the decision on nominations), Kleefeld wrote about the contrasting opinions that could be at play for some more contentious comics. Geneviève Castrée: Complete Works, by Geneviève Castrée, translation by Phil Elverum and Aleshia Jensen (Drawn & Quarterly) The Eisner Awards for 2023 have revealed the nominees this year, with comics artists, writers, and publishers being honored by the biggest awards show in comics. With 32 categories representing 150 print and online titles over 50 publishers, there’s plenty to be grateful for. As the old adage goes, it’s an honor just to be nominated. Vito Schnabel Gallery and Fantagraphics will host a book signing and launch party on Friday, October 28 from 6-8pm. Books will be available for sale on a first come, first serve basis. Over 300 drawings and paintings from the project will be on view in the gallery. Yes, I think the judges made a mistake, but that's bound to happen, regardless of who is at the table," says our source. "That is, the integrity of the awards and the process is still sound; over 90% of the nominations are entirely valid and well-chosen. These four nominations, though, are a shame. A miss. But maybe also an opportunity for the Eisners to revamp its system?"

While none of the Eisner judges have gone on record talking about Woodruff's book and this nomination specifically, our source familiar with the judging process tells us that they think mistakes were made - but that this situation could open a path towards broader improvements to the system.
