About this deal

Overall, I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good mystery with relatable and likable characters. On the other hand, if Belle was the narrator, it wouldn’t have shown all of the family events that Lizzie goes through.

There is also the added drama of the theatrical background, with jealous actresses, and a disappearing stagehand. The mystery kept me coming back to the book because you could never be sure of which characters you could trust. None of the events in the book were expected through my eyes – I was sure they had discovered who did the crime when yet another suspect was introduced! The fact that you can see the hooded figure in the background made me desperate to find out who it was and what part they played in the story. Set in eighteenth-century London, with all the fun and zest of Hamilton, Bridgerton fashion and inspired by real Black British historical figures. The three main settings are Lizzie’s house (a café) where there are many visitors and it is warm, snug and usually busy. So, as well as being a great story, it’s also informative and a brilliant conversation starter and empathy aid for MG children. The fact that it was also based upon my favourite Shakespeare play Othello, also made it an instant hit with me. Lizzie in depth, what she thought of certain individuals and their actions, and comments on her thoughts in general.

A phan mae tad Lizzie, sy’n actor, bron yn cael ei ladd gan siandelïer sy’n cwympo, mae’r ddwy yn gwybod nad damwain oedd hyn. Lizzie’s father is almost killed and the girls feel it is their duty to find out who tried to kill him.I liked the book layout which had plenty of excellent black and white illustrations, copies of letters and case notes and decorated chapter headings. On opening night as he entered the stage, a chandelier dropped from the ceiling but it was at this moment that Elizabeth Sancho saw Dido Belle, the first black girl her age that she has seen. The age range it was reaching for was still present in the descriptions of characters and plot twists, but I liked it. I would definitely recommend this book to others as the mystery kept me coming back and the end didn’t disappoint! The characters were deep, the plot had more twists than a coiled spring with a bounce at the end to tie it in… Then just when you think all loose ends are folded up, it gives you the smash and grab that sets you up for the rest of the Lizzie and Belle Mysteries!

Williams studied English Literature at Cambridge University before becoming a primary school teacher. T. Williams described them made me feel as though I was right there with them, joining in with their adventure. Set in 1700s London, Lizzie and Belle meet unexpectedly but find they both have inquisitive minds and love solving mysteries so when Lizzie's Dad (the first black man to take to the stage in Othello) narrowly survives an attempt on his life, the girls are determined to investigate, despite all of the ways society and other people try to stop them. I have been a blogger for a few years now and I love to be able to read and review books for you all to look at. However, when Lizzie and Belle were delivering their speech at the theatre, I found it quite sad when some people started to walk out. And when Lizzie’s actor father is nearly killed by a falling chandelier, they both know it wasn’t an accident. I’m sure that we need more books where race isn’t a subject to talk about, as people need to be represented how they are and not what or who, but the time that this book is set works with the idea well.

The second id the theatre, where the crime happens, and is therefore the main place of investigation. But that still left me wondering what else was there for a pre teen or teen after we aged out of American girls .
