About this deal

Benny Golson, who came to the attention of the jazz public with Tadd Dameron's band and Dizzy Gillespie's orchestra, was a member of the Jazztet — the group he had formed with Art Farmer — at the time of this recording. In away, the story of Ben Webster's saxophone career is the story of jazz music itself through decades of experience. I have been caught all too many times by what should have been a better quality sound recording, to find it was in fact much worse. Third, there is another version ( Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue) with slightly different typesetting that is most distinguishable in the width of the characters that form the catalog number and "Stereo Fidelity" at the top of the labels. All-in-all this edition of Kind of Blue meets the highest audiophile standards and offers the truest sound for the most enjoyment. D) – Concert of Saturday, April 9, 1960: MD, CA, JC, WK, PC, JCB (at the Kurhaus, Den Haag, Holland). Now Miles’ trumpet is coming through the left channel and the percussion is coming through the right. Davis played trumpet sublime with his ensemble sextet featuring pianist Bill Evans, drummer Jimmy Cobb, bassist Paul Chambers, and saxophonists John Coltrane and Julian “Cannonball” Adderley with Wyton Kelly playing piano on “Freddy the Freeloader. This 1959 all-time classic is one of the monuments of jazz: So What; Freddie Freeloader; Blue in Green; All Blues , and Flamenco Sketches .

All sessions took place at Columbia’s old 30th Street Studio, supervised by Columbia staff producer Irving Townsend, and recording engineer Fred Plaut. I’d say the UHQR sounds better than both other options but this and the mono version are totally acceptable. Some 1959 stereo pressings had the title "Kind of Blue" occupying one line only on both sides (like in the promo; I assume these are the earlier 1959 pressings), others had Side A with the title on two lines while Side B has it on one line but the track listing sequence corrected (like the one pictured on this page), while others have both sides with the title on two lines. It's the pinnacle of modal jazz -- tonality and solos build from chords, not the overall key, giving the music a subtly shifting quality. This speed issue affected the album’s first three tracks, “So What,” “Freddie Freeloader” and “Blue in Green,” making them a barely perceptible quarter-tone sharp. It opens with the effortlessly cool track ‘So What’ and had a big influence across pop and rock artists through the 1960s and 1970s. Existe una versión remasterizada y en vinilo de 180 gr, con dos discos con piezas añadidas y tomas alternativas que merece la pena; yo la poseo en CD y está muy bien. Even for musicians of the calibre of Coltrane and Bill Evans, there’s a special unplannable magic here, where every player is utterly in the zone and in synergy. The whole has a weightless and haunting quality, sustained by steady, unhurried tempos and a balance of sound that has rarely been equalled in the history of jazz recording.

A first rate orchestra (The Boston Pops), a distinguished conductor (Arthur Fiedler), and a superb pianist (Earl Wild) combine to make this landmark recording something to be treasured. Released on August 17th 1959, Miles Davis' Kind of Blue is widely recognised as one of the most influential jazz records ever produced, with its influence still being heard in music to this day.
