About this deal

Her best friend disappeared and has left a question hanging over them all which has never been answered. Frustration aside, I enjoyed the dual narrative as it gives the reader a wider perspective on events, both past and present. Dorothy Koomson is the award-winning author of 14 novels including more than 12 Sunday Times bestsellers.

A trail of beautiful 'life-sized' Mermaid statues based on the 18th century local legend of The Black Rock Mermaid. When Nell and Jude find a body on the beach after sneaking out of their houses to go to a party, neither one could imagine the far-reaching consequences it’ll have on them and their families’ lives. The Brighton Mermaid is a breathtakingly brilliant, twisty belter of a book and you need to read it!I am utterly convinced that Dorothy Koomson gets better and better with every single book, and this is no exception. Told over a few time frames, but primarily 1993 and present day, we learn what happened when Enelle Okorie (known as Nell) and Judana Dalton (known as Jude) were teenagers and found the body of a young woman washed up on Brighton beach. The thing that kept me engrossed in the Brighton Mermaid was the family drama; Nell and Macy had a strained relationship. O amor, essa droga capaz de nos fazer cometer as maiores loucuras, sequestrou o meu cérebro e levou-me a fazer isto. Again, the focus on it becomes less as the story progresses, but it is always there, lingering and making us aware that there are issues, here in the UK, in our towns, even in 2018.

I really enjoyed reading about Nell and the two key narratives: one focussing on her time as a child - before, during, and after the discover of the mysterous murdered woman and the disappearance of her her best friend, Jude) - and one set in the present day, as Nell deals with her past and tries to work out who could be watching, following and slowly torementing her. I’m writing this review from a very interesting place today, because I have just come away from a weekend spent at the Romantic Novelists’ Association conference in Lancaster where one of the highlights of the weekend for me was listening to Dorothy Koomson in conversation about her writing with RNA Chair, Alison May.Fast forward twenty-five years and the mystery of who The Brighton Mermaid was and who killed those women are still unsolved, and Nell's best friend Jude is still missing. Suffice to say though, they pretty much all involve an absolutely vile and despicable character that made my skin crawl.

The story is told in a mix of past and present as we are brought up to date with Nell's life and why 25 years on she is obsessed with discovering the identity of the Brighton Mermaid. I usually quite enjoy Dorothy Koomson books but I found this one was very slow to get going and honestly a bit boring at times.

The Brighton Mermaid combines a highly original plot and relatable, sympathetic characters with a juicy mystery and a host of secrets.
