About this deal

Our Essentials Bundles include the f-stop camera backpack of your choosing plus an Internal Camera Unit (ICU) and a rain cover. I know F-Stop knows how to make a great camera bag, but there is certainly room for improvement in specification accuracy. I use the little pocket on the front to carry a rain cover, although the bag is weather resistant, if you’re caught out in a heavy shower, it’s always good to put a rain cover on to give you added protection. Oxford-weave ripstop nylon combined with a polyurethane film makes their Mountain line weather resistant, and every single strap feels like it could hold a loaded pack’s weight itself. The backpacks have no internal compartments for your gear so once you have selected the bag you then need to choose a camera bag insert, or ICU (internal camera unit) as F-stop refer to it, to go in it.

I have two camera bodies, six lenses, a flash, wireless triggers, grids, batteries, SD cards and a GPS tracker. f-stop bags are built for diehard photographers who want a bag that is durable enough to withstand constant contact with the outdoors. I have even taken out the ICU all together and just used the entire main compartment to house all my clothing for a flight. Thanks to the separately sold ICUs (internal camera units), you can arrange the backpack to your liking. For outdoor photographers it will be the Mountain Series in which there is a choice of 5 backpacks ranging in volume from the 32litre Lotus all the way up to the massive 80litre Shinn, each available in a choice of 3 colours . The top of the bag is spacious and is great for carrying smaller bits and bobs, especially since it has additional mesh-lined pockets for small accessories / keys / compass / mobile phone.

It’s important to remember that when choosing an ICU from these four recommended options, there is no right or wrong answer. Most of F-Stop’s bags are built around their ICU system (with ICU being short for the Internal Camera Unit). Third party gear pouches can be added to the waist belt via molle straps for quick access of essential items such as batteries, filters, lenses, or even additional water bottles. Now this has been replaced with a complete organiser panel which includes a drop-in laptop sleeve and multiple quick access storage pockets (most of which use magnetic fasteners which are quick and quiet to open).

Personally, I recommend making it as snug as possible to distribute the weight of the bag more evenly over the shoulders and upper back. When F-Stop launched in 2006, the Tilopa was one of its first products, and it would be hard to argue with the notion that, at the time, it redefined the genre of rugged camera bags for outdoor photographers. That said, the depth of the Tilopa makes the Small Shallow and Medium Shallow sizes float around too much, and the Micro Tiny will almost get lost in the bag’s cavernous interior. With the Tilopa being as full as it is once laden with photographic gear, I can’t help but think that it’s a case of “jack of all trades but master of none”.
