About this deal

Peel back a few layers for a fun action packed black comedy, peel back a few more for a troublesome family drama, peel back some more for a dangerous glimpse into how easy it is for the characters to do horrible things to each other. Though I am not fond of flashbacks, in this book they do a nice job describing Sharrow's past, who herself is a competent protagonist with a fair amount of initiative and plenty of problematic character traits. So, for example, if you are the sole conscious being, this review was actually written by you, or some part of your mind. He presents a galaxy full of technological wonders where thermonuclear war is tactical and a part of regular business, a galaxy where religions and corporations take the place of countries and legislate their desires through a world court, a galaxy where all is part of an enlightened dark age where the amazing is terrible and the adventurous is appalling.None of the conflict's various sides had claimed responsibility and it was thought the perpetrators of the strike would never be discovered; the most likely explanation was held to be that the target had been the Sad Brothers rather than the building itself and the attack had been a rival cult settling some old score; there had been a lot of that sort of thing during the brief war, especially between the more militant faiths.

Then we are treated to last bit of family drama, two or three more sudden reverses of fortune, and in the end Sharrow just runs after Geis to hunt him down, not even thinking to pick up the shiny plot gun lying around. His sense of absurd is as sharp as Schismatrix era Sterling and he is darker and funnier than Gibson. Interviewed on Mark Lawson's BBC Four series, first broadcast in the UK on 14 November 2006, Banks explained why his novels are published under two different names.

I will go back to it but I've just removed it and downloaded The Hydrogen Sonata to see if I fair better with that one. She’ll be released if Sharrow can bring a mythical book known as The Universal Principles to the Brothers of the House.

There's a great book in here trying to get out, it's a shame his editor didn't push for another draft. The Thrail star system is coming up on its 20,000 anniversary of civilization and has colonized most of the solar system via 'terraforming' and space habitats. Sharrow was once the leader of a personality-attuned combat team in one of the sporadic little commercial wars in the civilisation based around the planet Golter. The Bond villain, when she meets him in his inner sanctum, manages not only to get the situation reversed on him and his trusted lieutenants killed, but also has an escape vehicle standing right there for the taking.Bookends: The online epilogue puts us back on a cable car, just like the one Sharrow's mother died on. Banks isn't writing a cheesy adventure story; he's not creating a science fiction galaxy for entertainment purposes; he's not playing around at all.

It reminded me of Matter, where the big ideas/tech almost make the plot superfluous, but here, the plot has a little more substance.Iain Banks has always been a favourite author for me and this novel is typical of his unique style and sheer imagination which never ceases to amaze me! Banks takes a literary turn here, breaking up the narrative with numerous flashbacks of Sharrow's life as the story progresses. BFG: A group of solipsistic mercenaries dump an advanced weapon that they have been gifted after falsely assuming that it has run out of ammo.
